Kavya pinched the last wooden peg off a still-damp yellow kurta and tossed it into the plastic bowl. The click sounded too sharp in our small rented living room.
My bhabhi kept her eyes on the clothes as if the pile could answer her. Mihir, my elder brother, had already left for his night duty, and the two of us had been told to finish the laundry before the humidity ruined the cotton.
She sat on the carpet with her white salwar tucked under her knees. The pale yellow kurta clung a little at her back. I stayed on the sofa edge with a stack of towels, pretending the work needed two people.
“You can go,” Kavya said. “You told me you had notes to copy at Farhan’s place.”
I had told her that. The lie sat between us like a third person.
She lifted a blue shirt I used for college presentations and smoothed the collar with her thumb. Earlier in the week she had announced, quite firmly, that a bhabhi was not a servant and she would not fold my things.
The contradiction was right there in her hands.
“You told me you don’t fold my clothes,” I said. “Why is that shirt in your hands?”
Her thumb stopped. For a second the ceiling fan was the only moving thing in the room.
“Because you left it on the chair like a child,” she said, but her voice had no scolding in it.
“That is not why.”
Kavya looked up at last. In this corner of India, people learned to keep family talk inside the walls, and her face showed she knew we had stepped past a safe line.
The Shirt in Her Hands
“Then you tell me why you are still here, Kabir. Farhan does not live in this living room.”
I could have laughed. My mouth went dry instead.
“I stayed because you were going to sit here alone with this pile.”
“That is a sweet excuse.” She still held the blue shirt. “Do you think I did not notice you watching my hands?”
Heat climbed my neck. The towels on my lap felt suddenly stupid.
“I was watching the work.”
“No.” Kavya set the shirt on her knee, not on the folded stack. “You watch me the way married women are not supposed to be watched in a brother’s house.”
The sentence landed and stayed.
“If that bothers you, I will go.”
“It bothers me that you lie about notes.” Her chin lifted. “It bothers me more that I folded this shirt on purpose.”
I stared at the collar her thumb had smoothed. “On purpose.”
“Yes.” One word, no apology.
She waited, and the waiting was the question.
“I wanted you to stay,” I said. “Not for laundry.”
Kavya’s breath left her slowly. She put the blue shirt on the sofa beside me, close enough that the sleeve touched my thigh.
“Then stop pretending you are a guest in this room.”
I leaned forward. She met me halfway, mouth first, no clumsy bump of noses. Her lips were dry from the fan and then they were not. The yellow kurta wrinkled under my palm at her waist.
She made a small sound into the kiss and pulled at my grey t-shirt. I lifted my arms. The cotton dragged over my head and dropped somewhere near the towels.
“If you want this, say it,” she whispered against my jaw.
“I want this.”
Her answer was her mouth on mine again, harder, and her hand sliding from my chest to the waistband of my shorts. That was the only check either of us needed.
We Stopped Pretending
Kavya pushed until my shoulders met the sofa cushion. She climbed into my lap with the salwar still on, knees bracketing my hips. The yellow kurta rode up. Bare skin at her waist was hot from the closed room.
She kissed down my throat and bit once, not hard enough to mark, then harder when I gasped. Her dupatta had already slipped to the carpet. Neither of us had watched it fall.
“Look at me,” she said.
I did. Her eyes were dark and irritated and hungry, as if she resented how long the week had taken to reach this point.
The kurta came off in a rustle. She wore a plain beige bra that had gone slightly grey in the wash. A laugh escaped me at the ordinary sight of it, and she frowned.
“If you laugh, I will put the shirt back on you.”
“I am not laughing at you.”
“Then unhook it.”
The clasp gave. Her breasts filled my hands, heavier than the modest neckline had suggested. When I took a nipple into my mouth she arched and clutched my hair, and the laundry pile slid, socks tumbling off the sofa.
We ignored them.
She stood to push the salwar and underwear down together. I shoved my shorts and briefs to my ankles and kicked them away. For a moment we were just two adults in a cramped Guwahati flat, naked among half-folded towels, and the honesty of that made my chest tight.
Kavya straddled me again. She took my cock in her fist and stroked slowly, watching my face the way she had watched the collar.
“You have thought about this.”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Long enough that I should be ashamed.”
“Be ashamed later.” She guided the head between her legs. She was already wet. She sank down with a shaky breath, taking me inside in two careful movements, then a third that seated me fully.
The heat of her made my hands spasm on her hips. She did not rush. She rolled her hips in a small circle, testing, then lifted and dropped with a wet sound that seemed too loud for a family living room.
Even at this hour Guwahati sounded like any crowded Indian street beyond the window, horns and a vendor calling, none of it belonging to us.
“Hold me properly,” she said, almost annoyed, and I wrapped both arms around her back. That changed the angle. She gasped against my shoulder and started to move in earnest, thighs working, the beige bra hanging forgotten from one elbow until I tugged it off completely.
Each drop of her hips drove a pulse up my spine. I thrust up to meet her and she caught my face in both hands, kissing me messy, teeth catching my lower lip.
“Slower,” she muttered, then immediately contradicted herself by grinding down harder. “No. Like that. Don’t you dare stop.”
Sweat gathered between her breasts. I licked it, then sucked the other nipple until she swore under her breath, a word Mihir would not have believed she knew. The sofa creaked. A towel slithered to the floor.
When her rhythm broke, I slid a hand between us and found her clit with my thumb. Kavya’s head fell back. She came with her mouth open and almost silent, inner muscles clutching in tight waves that nearly pulled me over with her.
She stayed folded against my chest, breathing hard, still seated on my cock. After a few seconds she laughed once, shaky.
“The carpet,” she said. “The sofa is going to announce us to the whole floor.”
We spilled onto the floor among the scattered socks. She went onto her back and pulled me over her, knees opening around my waist. I pushed back into her in one long stroke. Her nails scored my shoulder.
The ceiling fan chopped the air above us. Her hair stuck to her cheek. I kissed the salt there and fucked her in a steady drive that made her breasts rock and her breath hitch on every other thrust.
“Kabir.” My name in her mouth sounded different from the way she used it at breakfast. “Harder. I can take it.”
I gave her harder. The carpet burned my knees. She hooked her heels at the small of my back and took every stroke, eyes on mine, refusing to hide. When she came again it was louder, a broken sound she smothered against my wrist, and that finished me. I buried myself deep and spilled inside her, hips jerking, vision going white at the edges.
We stayed like that until the shaking stopped. My forehead rested on her collarbone. Her fingers moved idly in my hair, not tender exactly, more like she was confirming I was still there.
The blue shirt had ended up half under my elbow, wrinkled now, collar no longer smooth.
She Took the Basket Down
Kavya eased me off her and sat up. For a moment she looked at the mess of towels and the yellow kurta crumpled beside the bowl of pegs, then she reached for the kurta first.
“Mihir will not be back before morning,” she said, as if reciting a bus time. “That is not permission to look stupid. Put your shorts on.”
I did. She stepped into the salwar, tied it, and hooked the dupatta over one shoulder. The living room still smelled like us. Outside, a scooter went by too fast, and the fan kept turning as if nothing in the flat had changed.
What had changed was simpler than I wanted it to be. The chore we had started was no longer a chore, and I would not be able to see her fold a collar without remembering her thumb on that blue fabric.
She gathered the remaining clothes into the plastic basket, working quickly, leaving the pegs where they were. When she came to the blue shirt she did not add it to the pile. She set it on my thigh instead, still warm from the floor.
“Fold that one yourself.”
Kavya lifted the basket, opened the passage door, and walked out toward the building terrace with the laundry on her hip, not looking back.
