Wife in Nagpur Shares Herself With Our Guest

Smita set the steel tumbler down harder than she needed to and stood between me and the Sunday paper. Gaurav was still on the sofa with his second cup, talking about a delayed train from Nagpur station.

“Harish, decide now,” she said. “Do we tell him to stay for more than chai, or do I send him home?”

I looked past her shoulder. Gaurav had come over after a work call that ran late, the same way he had for years, ever since college. He was thirty-five, married himself, and he had never crossed a line in our house. Smita was thirty-two and my wife. We had lived in this two-room flat near Sitabuldi for six years, in Nagpur, in India, where Sunday mornings usually meant papers, tea, and nothing else.

“Stay,” I said. The word came out before I dressed it up.

Smita did not smile like a joke. She turned, walked to the sofa, and sat close enough that her knee touched Gaurav’s. “Harish said you can stay. Not for more tea. For me.”

Gaurav’s cup paused. “Smita.”

“If you want to leave, leave,” she said. “I am asking, not trapping you. I have wanted this for months and I am tired of only talking about it after you go.”

He looked at me. I nodded once. He set the cup on the table with a small click.

She takes him off the sofa

Smita stood first. She held out her hand. Gaurav took it. They crossed the short space to our bedroom without hunting for keys or inventing an errand. I followed and stopped in the doorway because that was the place I had chosen when I answered her.

Our bed still had the crumpled sheet from the night before. Smita pulled her cotton kurta over her head and dropped it on the chair. She kept the petticoat on for a moment, then untied it and let it fall. She was bare except for a plain bra. Gaurav’s hands stayed at his sides until she reached for his shirt buttons.

“You can touch me,” she said. “I asked for this.”

He unhooked her bra. Her breasts sat heavy in his palms. She made a sound that was not polite. I stayed where I was, one shoulder on the frame, watching my wife pull a man I trusted onto our mattress.

Gaurav kissed her mouth. She kissed back with her eyes open, looking past him once toward me, then shutting them. His hand went down her stomach. She opened her legs without being asked. He found her already wet. Two fingers slid in and she lifted her hips.

“Don’t be careful,” she told him.

He stripped his trousers and underwear together. His cock was thick, darker at the head, already leaking. Smita wrapped her fingers around it and stroked once, twice, then guided him between her thighs.

He pushed in slow at first. She was tight around him and she swore under her breath, a mix of Hindi and English that she never used with me in that tone. When he was fully inside, she locked her ankles at his back.

I could see the stretch of her. I could see how her mouth stayed open. Gaurav began to fuck her with short, deep strokes that made the bed knock the wall. In India, in a building like ours, that sound carried, but neither of them slowed.

Smita reached for my wrist without looking. I stepped closer. She put my hand on her breast while Gaurav kept moving. Her nipple was hard under my palm. She was not performing for me. She was using both of us.

“Harder,” she said to him.

He hooked her knees higher. The slap of skin filled the room. She came first, shaking, her nails in his shoulder, a broken sound that made him groan. He did not stop. He drove through it until her second wave made her thighs tremble.

He finishes where she tells him

“Inside,” Smita said. “I am on the pill. Do it.”

Gaurav’s rhythm broke. He buried himself and came with his forehead on her collarbone. I watched his back lock. I watched my wife take it, her heels still pressed to him, her hand still covering mine on her chest.

They stayed joined for a few breaths. Then he eased out. Semen followed, slow, onto the sheet between her legs. Smita did not cover herself. She looked at me, flushed, hair stuck to her neck.

“You decided,” she said. “This is what the answer looks like.”

Gaurav sat on the edge of the bed and pulled his trousers up without rushing into talk. Smita reached for her petticoat and tied it loosely. She left the kurta on the chair.

I went back to the doorway because standing over them felt wrong after what I had allowed. The Sunday paper still lay folded on the table in the other room. The steel tumbler still sat where she had set it down.

A knock cuts the quiet

The knock came from the main door, three sharp raps, the kind the building watchman used when a parcel would not fit in the box. Gaurav stood at once. Smita pulled the kurta on without the bra. I went to the door because it was my name they would ask for.

The watchman held a small carton addressed to Harish Deshmukh. He glanced past me, saw Gaurav putting on his shoes, saw Smita in the hallway with her hair still messy, and he said nothing except, “Sign here.”

I signed. He left. The carton was ordinary, a book I had ordered weeks ago. It did not matter. What mattered was that a man from our building had seen the three of us in that state, in our Nagpur flat, in the middle of a Sunday that was supposed to be tea and a paper.

Gaurav finished tying his laces. “I should go,” he said.

Smita did not ask him to stay a second time. She walked him to the door, touched his arm once, and let him leave down the stairs. When the landing was empty she shut the door and leaned her back against it.

“People talk in this colony,” she said. “You knew that when you said stay.”

I set the carton on the table beside the cold tea. She crossed the room, took my face in both hands, and kissed me with the same mouth that had been on him. It tasted like salt and him and her.

“I am still your wife,” she said. “That part did not change. The rest did.”

Outside, a scooter started in the lane. Inside, the bed still smelled like the three of us. Smita went to the kitchen tap, washed her hands, and did not apologize for the stain on the sheet. I picked up the paper and could not read a line of it. The decision she had forced at the tumbler had already left the flat with Gaurav and with the watchman’s glance, and there was no way to fold it back into an ordinary Sunday in India.
