Shalini stopped my tea cup with two fingers before it reached my mouth. “Pick one. Your headline or mine. The Hyderabad retailer call is in forty minutes, and I am not walking in with two versions.”
The open floor still hummed with keyboards and a blender from the pantry. I had been sitting there the way I always did after lunch, cooling chai and rereading my own pack line as if staring would make it braver.
“Yours,” I said.
She did not smile like a winner. She jerked her chin toward the frosted meeting room at the end of the row. “Then come lock it with me. I will not type it alone while you hide behind a mug.”
I stood. The decision had already changed the next minute. If I had kept my line, I would have stayed at the desk and sent her a polite refusal. Because I gave her the win, I followed her past the potted palms, past the India retail board with our south cluster map, and into the small room where the wall screen still showed both headlines side by side.
Our Hyderabad office handled the south cluster for a snack brand that sold across India, and every Hindi-English pack fight felt personal. Clients wanted a line that could live on a Telugu shelf talker without sounding shy.
“Read mine out loud,” Shalini said. She was already at the screen, cream kurta falling straight over black trousers, gold chain catching the overhead light. “If you chose it, you can hear it.”
I read it. The line was sharper than mine. She stepped in until the heat of her arm crossed my rolled sleeve.
“You hate that it is better.”
“I hate that you rushed me.”
“You still picked it.” Her mouth was close enough that the words touched my jaw. “Do not pretend this is only copy.”
We Stopped Talking Copy
I should have stepped back. The glass was frosted, not blind, and the floor outside still moved. Instead I turned my face and kissed her. She kissed back at once, no freeze, no little theatre of surprise. Her fingers hooked my belt.
“Yes?” she asked against my mouth, one word, not a speech.
“Yes,” I said, and that was the whole agreement. We did not discuss jobs or raises. The choice sat there like the headline, already made.
The kiss deepened until her clip knocked my cheek. I found the clasp and let her hair fall. She made a small annoyed sound, then pulled my shirt from my chinos and ran both palms up my back as if she had been waiting to do that through three weeks of stand-ups.
My belt buckle clicked against the low cabinet. She laughed into my neck, short and unkind, and bit the place where the collar had rubbed all morning. I lifted the hem of her kurta. Warm skin, a cotton bra, the chain sliding between us. She arched when my thumb crossed her nipple through the fabric, then shoved the kurta higher herself so I could mouth her there.
“Do not be gentle because we are at work,” she said. “I asked you in here.”
The wall screen still glowed with both pack lines, mine greyed out, hers in bold. I backed her against the cabinet under that glow and opened her trousers. She toed off one loafer, then the other, and kicked the trousers down. Black underwear, already damp when I pressed my fingers over the cloth. Her breath broke. She held my wrist and moved it where she wanted, impatient, the same way she moved a slide.
I dragged the underwear aside and slid two fingers into her. She was wet enough that the motion made a small sound in the quiet room. Her head tipped back against the cabinet door. One hand stayed in my hair, not petting, holding.
“More,” she said. “You are not drafting this.”
I worked her until her thighs shook and she clenched around my fingers, a hard, ugly little climax that made her swear in a whisper. She came down fast, eyes open, and reached for my zip. My cock was already thick against the chinos. She freed it, stroked once, too dry, then spat into her palm and did it properly until my knees wanted to drop.
Wallet, condom. I tore the packet with my teeth because my other hand was still on her hip. She watched me roll it on with the same look she used on a bad font, then nodded, satisfied that the thing was seated.
I lifted her a fraction so she sat on the cabinet edge. She hooked a leg around me and pulled me in. The first push made both of us stop talking. Tight, hot, the condom a thin drag that still let me feel her. I held still until she rolled her hips and took the rest.
“Move,” she said.
I fucked her in a steady rhythm that made the cabinet bump the wall. Her kurta bunched under her arms. The gold chain tapped my mouth when I bent to her breast. She was loud at first, then bit my shoulder to keep it down, because a printer started somewhere on the floor and the ordinary office noise came back like a warning.
Sweat collected at her hairline. I could smell her jasmine oil and my own chai on her fingers from when she had stopped the cup. She raked my back under the shirt and told me faster without making it a request. I gave her faster. The condom stayed put. Each thrust slapped skin, ugly and specific, and she soaked through the place where her underwear had been shoved aside.
Her second climax took longer. She chased it by grinding down whenever I bottomed out, eyes on the screen as if the headline itself were watching. When she came she went silent, mouth open, nails in my shoulder, inner muscles pulling so hard I had to lock my jaw not to follow her.
I was still inside her, still hard, still counting breaths, when the knock came.
A Vendor Needed the Room
Three knocks, polite, then a man’s voice through the frosted glass. “Ma’am? AC vendor is here for this room. Five minutes. He needs the vent above the screen.”
Shalini’s eyes snapped to the door. We had been facing the glass, her legs around me, the whole shape of us readable if anyone opened it. My first stupid thought was to pull out, dress, and finish the copy later like decent colleagues.
She shook her head once, sharp. “Tell him ten,” she whispered, and then, louder, toward the door, “Ten minutes. We are closing a slide.”
“Okay, ma’am. I will hold him at the pantry.” Footsteps receded.

Staying at the screen was finished. She pushed at my chest until I slipped out of her, still sheathed, still aching. “Other wall,” she said. “Blind side. If he comes back early I am not giving him a silhouette.”
We moved. Trousers around one of her ankles, my chinos open, condom slick. The far side of the cabinet sat out of the door’s sightline. She turned, palms on the laminate, kurta still up, and looked over her shoulder with a face that was not romantic at all.
“If you are going to come, do it now. I am not greeting a vendor with you still in me.”
I stepped in behind her and pushed back into that wet heat. The angle was deeper. She made a bitten noise and braced. I held her hip and the edge of the cabinet and drove, shorter strokes, the kind that stay quiet. Her hair stuck to my mouth. The wall screen, now behind us, kept humming with her winning line.
This was not the same sequence. Standing at the glow had been showy, almost an argument. Here we were hidden and rushed, and she reached back to grip my thigh whenever I slowed. I reached around and found her clit with two fingers, clumsy at this angle, and she shoved my hand harder against her until the motion matched my hips.
“There,” she said. “Do not lose it.”
She came a third time with her forehead on her forearm, a shake that traveled into me. That pulled me over. I buried the last thrusts and spent in the condom, hips tight to her ass, breath wrecked against her shoulder. For a few seconds the only sound was the air vent the vendor wanted and our breathing.
I pulled out carefully. The condom held. I tied it, wrapped it in tissue from the side table, and dropped it in the high bin under paper scraps so it would not sit like a confession. She dragged her underwear and trousers up, found her loafers, and pushed the kurta down with both hands. The clip went back in crooked. I buttoned my shirt, missed the second hole, fixed it, tucked, belted, checked the front of my chinos for a wet mark. None.
Shalini looked at the screen, then at me. “I will take the line to the main boardroom. You bring the claims appendix from your desk. Do not wander.”
She left first, loafers quick on the tile, cream kurta already looking like work again except for the crooked clip. I stood another minute because my legs had not agreed to walk. The room smelled like sex and marker ink. I picked my ID badge off the cabinet where it had fallen, clipped it on, and reached for the door with the plan still in my head: appendix, boardroom, stand beside her while the Hyderabad retailers saw her headline.
The Call Started Early
The wall screen flipped by itself when the calendar overlay woke. A small live tile from the main boardroom filled the corner. Shalini was already there, seated, hair clip still wrong, the client faces on the big TV. Her pack line sat huge on their shared slide. My chair at that table was empty. The time stamp said the call had started four minutes ago.
She had not waited. The appendix was a courtesy I was no longer required to deliver.
I did not go to the boardroom. I walked the long way, past the pantry where the vendor waited with his toolbox, past the India cluster map, and back to my desk. The join button on my laptop was already pulsing. I declined it. The headset that had been around my neck before the tea went into the drawer, and I sat down to the open floor noise as if the next forty minutes belonged to someone else.
