“Stay on the tape,” Dorian said, tapping the lobby carpet with the toe of his shoe. “Photo is moving up. Nobody disappears for stairs, coffee, or a so-called breath of air.”
Gemma’s smile stayed on for the vendors. The stack of launch pins in her hands pressed into her navy blouse. She looked at me like I had arranged the whole trap.
“You asked him to pin us here,” she said, barely moving her lips.
“I did not. I told him we needed ten minutes. He heard volunteer.”
That call wrecked Thursday’s promise. After we closed the campaign deck I had said if we survived launch week we would stop circling. She had laughed and answered that the service stairs during the mixer would count, or nothing would.
I thought she meant the talk. She thought I would dodge Dorian. Instead he moved the group photo twenty minutes forward and made us the human backdrop beside the merch table in our Columbus office.
The atrium already smelled like citrus punch and hot lights. A photographer’s stand waited by the glass doors. People from media buying laughed too loudly near the sheet cake.
Gemma set the pins down harder than she needed to.
“If you wanted an audience, Calvin, you could have said.”
“I wanted the stairs. I still do.”
“Then stop looking like a man waiting to be dismissed.”
She turned toward the sample room behind the merch wall, the one with rolling racks of last season’s jackets and boxed tote bags. Following her was easier than standing on Dorian’s tape with that look still on her face.
The Mixer Photo Came Early
Inside, the door eased shut on mixer noise. Overhead lights hummed. A roll of white backdrop paper leaned in the corner. Gemma put her back to a rack and crossed her arms.
“You promised a talk,” she said. “Not a portrait.”
“I promised both of us would stop pretending. He stole the window. I did not offer you up.”
Her breath came out slow. Anger slipped, and something older showed, the thing we had been carrying through late edits and shared headphones.
“If we go back out there, we smile until six and never say it.”
“Then we do not go back yet.”
She stepped in. Her mouth met mine without a speech. The kiss was not shy. She opened under it, fists already in my gray shirt, tugging me between two racks of sample coats.
Mint from the welcome bowl was still on her tongue. Hands found her waist, then the hem of the navy blouse, sliding under to warm skin. She made a small sound into my mouth and pushed her hips against me, clear as any sentence we had failed to finish on the stairs.
The blouse came open enough for my mouth to find the edge of her bra. She dragged at my belt, not frantic, just decided. When a palm cupped her through the black trousers she rocked into it and said my name like a warning and an invitation together.
“Yes,” she added, as if I had asked a different question, and her hand covered mine to press it harder.
Trousers opened. Fingers slid inside and found her already wet. A slow circle on her clit made her knee buckle against my thigh. She bit my shoulder through the shirt to stay quiet. The racks chimed when her shoulder hit them.
“If anyone hears that, Dorian will put us on the tape again,” she whispered, half laughing, half wrecked.
“Then hold still.”
She did not hold still. Her fist closed around my cock after she shoved the front of my trousers down. The first stroke pulled a sound out of me I did not mean to give the sample room. Wallet, condom, foil. She watched me roll it on, eyes dark, then hooked a leg around my hip.
Lifting her just enough, I lined up and pushed in. Tight, hot, a broken exhale against my mouth. For a few thrusts we stayed like that, coats swinging around us, her nails in my back, the mixer thudding faintly through the wall like a clock we were ignoring on purpose.
The narrow aisle forced short strokes. Her blouse hung open. One breast slipped free of the cup, and I sucked it while she held the rack for balance. She clenched every time I went deep, forehead knocking mine, breath catching on my name again.
“Do not you dare go pose,” she whispered.
“Not leaving.”
Work still sat on the other side of that door: pins, cake, Dorian’s marks on the carpet. None of it paid for this. None of it could call it back either. She rolled against me like she had chosen the loss of the photo and wanted me to feel the choice in her body.
A hanger tapped my ear. Somewhere a vendor laughed too close to the merch wall. Gemma’s fingers dug in harder, not from fear, from the greedy decision to keep going anyway.
The handle turned.
We Stopped Pretending There
We froze with me still inside her. Breathing stayed against each other’s mouths. Pax, the intern with the clipboard, leaned in without crossing the threshold.
“Extra lanyards?” he called. “Dorian said this closet.”
Gemma’s eyes were wide and bright. Pax grabbed a cardboard box from the shelf by the door and never looked past the first rack.
“Never mind, I got them. Photo already started anyway. They’re stuffing interns in the back row. You two can miss it.”
The door shut. Sneakers squeaked away.

Office Sex After She Learned I Volunteered Her
Elise blocked me after the pipeline meeting because I volunteered her for Harbor. The rush-back plan died in that sentence. We had been ready to button up and fake a smile under hot lights. Now the picture had begun without us, and the stolen window had opened again in a different shape.
She rolled her hips on me, slow now.
“Stay,” she whispered.
Turning her took care. We stayed joined as much as the trousers allowed until her hands braced on the packing table. From behind the strokes could be longer. One hand worked her clit. The other covered her mouth when she got loud. She pushed back, greedy, trousers at her knees, heels still on, navy blouse still open, the condom still on me.
“Harder,” she said into my palm, and I gave her that, the table legs whispering on the tile.
Coats brushed our arms. A boxed tote slid an inch and stopped. The mixer music swelled, some bright track chosen for vendors, and she laughed once against my hand because the timing was obscene and perfect.
“They can keep the backdrop,” she muttered when I eased my palm away. “I am not going out there half finished.”
“Good.”
The packing table took her weight. I fucked her with the longer rhythm the interruption had bought us, not the panicked one from before Pax. She met every thrust. When her voice rose I kissed her shoulder instead of covering her mouth again, and she bit the inside of her own wrist, navy sleeve bunched there.
Sweat made the blouse cling. My gray shirt was a wreck against her back. The condom held as I went deep and stayed, grinding, her clit under my fingers until she shook and pulsed around me, silent and violent, knees dipping.
That pull took me with her. I came hard, teeth in the shoulder of her blouse so I would not shout into the mixer, hips tight to hers until the lights stopped swimming.
We stayed stacked there for a few breaths. I pulled out carefully, tied the condom, wrapped it in a discarded packing slip, and dropped it in the bin. No lecture while we dressed. She fixed the bra, buttoned the navy blouse, smoothed the trousers. Belt, shirt, the ordinary armor went back on like we had only been counting tote bags.
She looked at the door, then at me, and chose the ordinary exit.
Cake Without Either Of Us
She walked out first. By the time I reached the merch table she was already at the cake, taking a paper plate as if she had stood in that line the whole afternoon.
Dorian was still posing people under the hot lights. He did not call our names. The launch pins she had abandoned were still in a crooked stack. I left them there.
She handed a slice of cake to a vendor and kept her eyes on the punch bowl, not on the service stairs and not on the sample room door.
