“If you step into that corridor before we finish this, Karthik, I am not coming after you.”
Leela kept the brass latch under her fingers, one sandal already half over the threshold of her aunt’s guest room. Maroon silk clung to her back. Nadaswaram leaked through the floorboards like a second argument that would not sit down.
I stayed by the window grill. May heat in Madurai sat on the roof tiles the way it does across so much of India, thick, dusty, and unapologetic. I had told her we should wait until the engagement songs ended before anyone saw us leave together. She had heard shame. I had meant caution.
“Your uncles still introduce me as the boy from college,” I said. “I am not walking into their questions in the middle of Anjali’s function.”
“Then you should not have touched me in the kitchen an hour ago.” Her voice stayed low, but it had an edge that did not belong in a house full of relatives. “You want the private parts of this and none of the public ones.”
That was the unfinished thing. We had started the fight in whispers beside the steel cupboard and never closed it. She believed I wanted something that could be folded into a spare room. I believed she wanted a declaration I had not been given time to make.
“I did not say I was leaving you. I said I was leaving this room until the aarti crowd thinned.”
She laughed once, without humour. “Same door. Same disappearing act.”
Her aunt Shobha called something about jasmine garlands from the courtyard, and Leela’s shoulders went rigid. She could have opened the latch. She could have gone down in her engagement jewellery and left me with the camphor smell and my half-finished defence.
I crossed the small gap of floor. I did not grab her. My palm settled on the painted wood beside her wrist.
“Stay. Finish it here. If you still want the corridor after that, I will not stop you.”
She looked at my hand, then at my face. For a long breath she did not move. Then she eased the latch back, turned the little bolt, and let her sandal drop fully inside the room.
“I am staying because I choose to. Not because you asked nicely.”
The Unfinished Fight
The guest room was a narrow rectangle of rented quiet: a thin mattress on a wooden cot, a tied-up mosquito net, a steel almirah with someone else’s folded towels. Tube light made her gold bangles look sharper than they were.
“You touched my waist in front of the wet grinder like we were still in college,” she said. “Then you told me to wait. Do you hear how that sounds?”
“It sounds like your uncle Raman is sitting under the neem tree with three cousins from Trichy and a glass of buttermilk. It sounds like I do not want your name turned into a joke before you have decided what this is.”
Leela stepped away from the door. The pallu slipped from her shoulder and she did not fix it. “What this is. You talk as if I am a file.”
“You are the woman I have been sleeping badly over since February. That is not a file.”
Her mouth twitched, almost a smile, then flattened. “Say you are not ashamed of me in this house.”
“I am ashamed of how badly I handle your uncles. That is different.”
She came close enough that jasmine from her hair mixed with the camphor in the curtains. Relatives who had travelled from other cities in India filled the courtyard below, their slippers slapping stone, their voices rising whenever the nadaswaram paused. None of that noise solved the look on her face.
“If I stay in this room, Karthik, I am not staying for a careful talk.” Her fingers found the first button of my cream shirt and waited there, not pushing, not retreating. “I want your mouth. I want you inside me. If that is not what you want, open the bolt yourself.”
“It is what I want.”
That was the whole of it. She nodded once, small and certain, and pulled my mouth down to hers.
The kiss was not polite. Her teeth caught my lower lip. My hands found the bare strip of waist between blouse and petticoat, hot from the Madurai evening, damp where the silk had been pressed. She made a sound into my mouth that the drums downstairs almost covered.
We moved because the door was still at her back and the bolt was only a small brass thing. The cot took her weight with a dry creak. She pulled me with her by the shirt, and two buttons went wider than they should have.
“Careful with the blouse hooks,” she muttered against my throat. “Shobha will notice missing embroidery faster than she notices a rumpled pallu.”
I laughed into her skin, then got the hooks undone with less grace than the warning deserved. The maroon blouse opened. Her breasts lifted as she drew a breath, nipples already tight. I put my mouth on one and she arched, bangles chiming when her hand clamped the back of my head.
“Yes. Like that.”
The saree came away in folds that refused to be neat. Petticoat string yielded. She was wet when my fingers slid between her thighs, and she pushed into my hand as if the fight had been stored there all evening. Two fingers, then a slower press of my thumb, and her hips lost the engagement-house stiffness.
“Don’t tease until the aarti,” she said, half a command, half a broken laugh. “We do not have that kind of time.”
I stripped my belt and trousers without making a ceremony of it. Her palm closed around my cock, firm, unhurried, the same certainty she had used on the latch. Precum wet her fingers. She watched my face while she stroked, and whatever leftover anger she had been carrying turned into heat with nowhere else to go.
“Lie back.”
She did, jewellery still on, hair coming loose from its pins. I kissed down the line of her stomach and put my mouth on her. She tasted of salt and the afternoon’s leftover heat. Her thighs closed, then opened again when I found the rhythm she wanted. A heel pressed my shoulder. Downstairs someone shouted for extra chairs, and she clapped her own palm over her mouth to keep from answering them with a moan.
When she tugged my hair, it was not to stop me. It was to bring me up.
“Now. I want you in me now.”
I settled between her legs and pushed in slow enough to feel every inch of her taking me. She was tight, slick, impatient. Her nails scored my back through the open shirt. The cot answered with another creak that would have been funny if her eyes had not gone so dark.
“Move,” she whispered. “Karthik. Move.”
I fucked her in long strokes that made the wooden frame knock the wall, then shorter ones when she lifted to meet me. Sweat collected between her breasts. The tube light put a cheap halo on the gold at her throat. She dragged my forehead to hers and kept it there, breathing hard, saying my name like it was part of the unfinished sentence we had finally agreed to finish with our bodies.
Her legs hooked higher. The angle changed and she bit my shoulder to stay quiet. I reached between us and rubbed her clit in time with the thrusts. She came with a shudder that ran all the way to the hand still fisted in my shirt, inner muscles pulling at my cock until I had to freeze or follow her immediately.
“Don’t you dare stop,” she said, once she could speak. “I am not done with you.”
We rolled because the cot was too narrow for pride. She sat up on me, saree a ruined lake of maroon around our hips, and took me back in with a slow drop of her weight. Her palms braced on my chest. Bangles kept a private percussion that the courtyard drums could not quite drown.
From below, a child’s laugh burst and faded. She rode me anyway, jaw tight, eyes open. I held her waist and let her set it, the wet sound of her fucking herself on me filling the little room. When she leaned down, her hair curtained us, and the jasmine crushed against my mouth.
“Look at me,” she said.
I did. There was no leftover corridor in her face. Only this, chosen, greedy, a little angry still in the best way.
I sat up to meet her, still inside, and that closeness made her gasp. My mouth found her breast again. She rolled her hips in smaller circles, chasing a second crest, and I felt it build in the tremor of her thighs. When she came that time she pressed her forehead to mine and shook silently, as if the whole engagement party might hear a single honest sound and come up the stairs.
I lasted through that and not much more. She felt me thicken and squeezed around me on purpose. I spilled into her with my face in her neck, holding her as if the bolt on the door were a rumour. For a few breaths neither of us moved. The nadaswaram found a new pitch. A scooter horn complained somewhere toward the temple street.
She stroked my hair once, almost absent, then huffed a laugh into it. “Your shirt is a crime.”
“Your pallu is going to need a story that is not this story.”
“I will blame the heat. In Madurai that still works.”
Heat After She Turned Back
We stayed joined a little longer than sense allowed, because sense had already lost the evening. Her heartbeat hammered against my mouth. My palm rested on the damp small of her back, where the blouse should have been.
“You were going to walk out,” I said, not as an accusation, just as the fact that had brought us here.
“I was going to make you watch me do it.” She lifted off me with a wince and a sigh, and sat on the edge of the cot to find her petticoat. “Then you put your hand on the door instead of on my arm. That was the first intelligent thing you have done since the kitchen.”
I found my trousers on the floor by the almirah. The tube light made everything look slightly overexposed, including the mark my mouth had left above her blouse line. She noticed me noticing and tugged the silk up with a look that was half warning, half satisfaction.
Hooks. Pallu. Pins. She worked faster than I did, practised in the grammar of looking composed. I tucked my shirt and discovered one button hanging by a thread. There was no repairing that without a needle Shobha would later miss.
“Karthik.”
“Mm.”
“I still want you to stand in that courtyard later like a person who knows me. Not like a college boy who borrowed a guest room. That part of the fight is not finished. It is only postponed.”
“I heard you.”
She nodded, tying the petticoat with a hard little knot. The anger had somewhere honest to live now, which was better than the latch. I wanted to pull her back down. The cot would have taken us. The house would not have.
Outside the window grill, a string of fairy lights along the neem tree blinked as someone adjusted a plug. Engagement chatter rose, a tide of Tamil and English and the particular volume relatives use when they have eaten well and want photographs.
Leela checked her lipstick in the small mirror on the almirah and swore under her breath. I handed her the pallu pin she had dropped. Our fingers touched, and for a second the room tried to start again.
It did not get the chance.
Voices From the Courtyard
“Leela!” Shobha’s voice came up the stairwell, bright and public. “The photographer is here. Anjali wants you in the first set. Leave whatever you are doing and come.”
Leela’s eyes met mine. The bolt might as well have been decoration. She smoothed her hair, set her sandals right, and opened the latch with the same fingers that had almost left me.
“Stay off the landing for two minutes,” she murmured. “If Raman sees you coming out behind me, I will finish that fight in front of the priest.”
She went. Maroon silk flashed once on the stairs and was gone into the noise. I sat on the cot in the wreck of the guest room, shirt crooked, the smell of her still on my mouth, and listened to her aunt greet her as if nothing in India had ever happened above the courtyard.
A minute later my name floated up too, called by some uncle who wanted an extra pair of hands for chairs. The private room was over. I stood, put my face in order, and went down into the lights, where Leela already stood among the women with a smile that did not reach the place my hands had been.
